Sponsor A Child- Giving of Hope!

In the slum village of Mulago, Katanga, in the third world country of Uganda, I entered the world. Neither my father, a tailor, or my mother, a carpenter, could sustain a family of three children whilst sharing a home with other relatives consisting of one small room the same size as your home balcony.

Our daily diet was always posho (made by ‘mingling’ maize flour with water) and groundnuts and we joked that the nuts would take root and grow in our stomachs! Fast forward twenty years and mother eventually had to lie to gain entry for me, her first born, into Compassion International by claiming that I was an orphan. This mercifully worked out and I was able to go to school through their Child Sponsorship Program. The kindness of a Canadian lady funded my studies until I was able to leave and fend for myself. I studied and worked night and day in the hope of seeing the early years turn to joy and was rewarded by graduating and securing a job as an accountant in a manufacturing company.

The great call, however, couldn’t leave me in the account’s office. I was always thinking of the children in our community who didn’t have an equal opportunity to access the basic needs of food, shelter, and education. That burden remained with me until, in 2014 we began UFAM Uganda with the great aim of providing child sponsorship to many who are in the conditions in which I had grown up. Today UFAM Uganda sponsors nine children with the help of sponsors who donate $50 per month and our school is making a significant impact in the lives of orphans and needy children in Mukono Uganda.
